Life Path 2: why it lands on 5.00% of dates, not 11.11%

The arithmetic

A Life Path comes from the birth date and nothing else — not the name, not the hour, not the place. Reduce the month, the day and the year separately, add the three results, and reduce once more. Stop at 11, 22 or 33 wherever they appear.

Take 15 September 1967.

• Month: 9
• Day: 15 → 1 + 5 = 6
• Year: 1967 → 1 + 9 + 6 + 7 = 23 → 2 + 3 = 5

Then 9 + 6 + 5 = 20 → 2 + 0 = 2. That is a Life Path 2.

Reducing the three parts separately matters. Adding every digit of the date in one pass gives the same answer most of the time and quietly loses master numbers when it does not, which is why the two methods disagree for some people.

How often 2 actually comes up

Across the 73,049 calendar dates from 1 January 1900 to 31 December 2099, 3,650 of them are a Life Path 2 — 5.00%.

We computed this rather than looked it up. Here is every number:

Six of the single digits — 1, 3, 5, 7, 8 and 9 — each land on almost exactly one ninth of all dates, which is what you would expect. Three do not:

• 2 takes 5.00% instead of 11.11%, because every date that would have reduced to 2 through 11 stops at 11.
• 4 takes 7.74%, for the same reason via 22.
• 6 takes 10.58%, via 33.

The master numbers are not additions to the system. They are carved out of 2, 4 and 6, and the arithmetic shows exactly how much each one takes.

That makes 2 one of the three numbers the master numbers take from. A date that would have reduced to 2 by way of 11 stops at 11 instead, which is why 2 lands on 5.00% of dates rather than the 11.11% an even split would give it.

One caveat, because it is the sort of thing that gets repeated wrongly. These percentages describe calendar dates, not people. Births are not spread evenly across the year — more babies arrive in late summer than in midwinter in most of the northern hemisphere — so the share of people with a given Life Path is close to these figures but not identical to them. Nobody publishes the corrected version, ourselves included, because it would need national birth registers rather than a calendar.

What 2 is taken to describe

Partnership and attunement. Its difficulty is that the skill of reading a room is hard to switch off, and being the one who notices is tiring.

Read that as a description of a tension rather than a prediction. Every number in this system is a pair of things pulling against each other, and the useful question is not which number you are but which side of it you have been living on lately.

A Life Path on its own is one line. It becomes specific when it is read against the rest — a Life Path 2 with a Leo Sun is not the same person as a Life Path 2 with a Cancer Sun — and the interesting part is almost always where the two disagree rather than where they agree.
